REAL ID required to fly or access federal buildings starting May 7

Organ Mountain News report

SANTA FE - New Mexico residents will need a REAL ID, U.S. passport or other federally accepted identification to board commercial flights or enter certain federal buildings beginning May 7, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division is encouraging residents who want a REAL ID-compliant license to schedule an appointment either online or by phone. The updated identification is marked with a gold star in the upper right corner of the license.

Currently, about 80 percent of New Mexico-issued driver’s licenses meet REAL ID standards. The MVD also offers a standard license for individuals who do not want or are not eligible to receive a REAL ID.

To obtain a REAL ID, applicants must present documents that prove lawful identity and age, their Social Security number, and New Mexico residency. Acceptable documents include:

  • U.S. passport or passport card
  • U.S. birth certificate
  • Foreign passport with required U.S. Department of Homeland Security forms
  • Certificate of birth abroad
  • Tribal affidavit of birth
  • Valid DHS or U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services documentation
  • Social Security card
  • W-2, 1099 or pay stub with full SSN
  • Foreign passport with visa and I-94

A full list of acceptable documents is available at realid.mvd.newmexico.gov or in printable form here.
