LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces police arrested 18-year-old Jonathan Estrada, who investigators believe is responsible for the June 2 road rage shooting that killed 14-year-old Alejandro Roman.

Estrada was taken into custody Thursday morning at a business on the 6300 block of Bataan Memorial West.

He faces seven felony charges: second-degree murder, two counts of shooting at or from a motor vehicle, two counts of aggravated assault, tampering with evidence and violating probation. Estrada is being held without bond at the Doña Ana County Detention Center.

The shooting happened around 9 p.m. June 2 near Solano Drive and Spruce Avenue. Investigators say the incident began as road rage between two vehicles. Roman, 14, was a backseat passenger in a vehicle driven by a parent when he was shot and killed.

Police believe Estrada was driving a white mid-size SUV at the time of the shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing.
