Proposal would expand food options for thousands of New Mexicans using federal assistance

Organ Mountain News report

LAS CRUCES - U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez has introduced a bipartisan bill that would allow Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients to purchase hot rotisserie chicken.

Under current SNAP rules, recipients can buy uncooked or frozen chicken, but not ready-to-eat hot foods like rotisserie chicken.

Vasquez said the change would give families more flexibility to purchase affordable, prepared meals. A store-bought rotisserie chicken can cost about $6 and feed a family of four, according to the release.

New Mexico to impose new federal food aid document requirements to reduce errors
New paperwork requirements for food aid could affect how quickly and accurately some New Mexico households receive SNAP benefits.

The proposal, known as the HOT Rotisserie Chicken Act, is part of a broader push to expand what foods are eligible under SNAP.

About 460,000 New Mexicans rely on SNAP benefits, according to the release.

The bill would need to pass Congress before any changes take effect.
