LAS CRUCES - An Anthony man faces multiple felony charges after police say he strangled his girlfriend and repeatedly prevented her from leaving during a domestic violence incident at a Las Cruces trailer home in April.

Jose Piñon, 19, was charged with aggravated battery against a household member by strangulation, two counts of false imprisonment, three counts of battery against a household member, deprivation of property of a household member and criminal damage to property of a household member.

According to a statement of probable cause filed in the case, the alleged incident happened Thursday, April 23, at a trailer on West Hadley Avenue in Las Cruces.

Police said the woman told investigators the argument began after she received a phone call from another man. According to court records, Piñon allegedly took her phone from her and kept it for about 30 minutes.

The woman told investigators she attempted to leave the trailer through the back door because she did not feel safe. Police wrote that Piñon allegedly grabbed her from behind and pulled her back into the residence.

According to the filing, the woman repeatedly tried to leave the trailer but was prevented from doing so. Police said Piñon allegedly chased her through the residence, pulled her into a bedroom and pinned her to a bed.

Investigators wrote that Piñon allegedly placed his forearm on the woman’s neck and applied what she described as extreme pressure. The woman reportedly told police she could not breathe, became lightheaded and feared for her life during the incident.

Court records state the woman later managed to escape the trailer and get into her vehicle. However, investigators say Piñon allegedly entered the vehicle and refused to leave her alone.

Police also allege Piñon grabbed and twisted the woman’s hand while she attempted to wave to his mother for help and later punched the woman’s vehicle, causing damage to the door frame and roof.

According to the probable cause statement, investigators reviewed a cellphone video provided by the woman in which she repeatedly told Piñon to “get out.”

A public safety assessment later recommended release on recognizance despite the felony charges. A warrant in the case was served May 11 and Piñon was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center.
