LAS CRUCES - The Mesilla Valley Jazz and Blues Society will welcome the jazz and blues group BARLOW during its monthly gathering May 17 at Alma d’Arte Charter High School.

Organizers said the local favorite will return to the Alma d’Arte stage with a set of jazz and authentic blues charts.

The event begins with a 6:30 p.m. social followed by a short society update. BARLOW is scheduled to perform at 7 p.m.

The group includes Sam Barlow on guitar, harmonica and vocals, Sean Thoman Frankhouser on bass, Damian Christian on piano and Joe Seltzer on drums.

According to organizers, Barlow is an award-winning jazz and blues musician from Austin, Texas who frequently performs throughout Las Cruces and El Paso. He has been a finalist and semifinalist at the International Blues Challenge and received both a New Mexico Music Award and a CMA of Texas Award for harmonica performance on Richard Cagle’s “Zia Blues” album.

Frankhouser performs on both electric and upright bass across multiple music styles, according to the release. Christian is a Texas musician who studied throughout the Midland-Odessa area. Seltzer has performed with Grammy-nominated western group The Desperados for more than 20 years and has also worked with musicians across the Southwest.

Admission is $5 for Mesilla Valley Jazz and Blues Society members and $10 for non-members.

The event will take place at Alma d’Arte Charter High School, 402 W. Court Ave.

Organizers also highlighted the society’s monthly jazz jam sessions, held every third Thursday at Boba Cafe and Cabaret on Espina Street. The gatherings feature a mix of experienced and developing musicians performing with a house band. Musicians interested in participating can sign up by emailing MVJBSjazzjam@gmail.com.

Annual membership dues for the Mesilla Valley Jazz and Blues Society are $25 for individuals, $40 for families and $5 for students.
