LAS CRUCES - A 61-year-old bicyclist died Tuesday evening following a collision with a vehicle on Alameda Boulevard, according to Las Cruces police.
The crash occurred around 7:20 p.m. near the intersection of north Alameda Boulevard and Harvard Drive. Police and firefighters responded to find the bicyclist, identified as Lorenzo Espinoza of Las Cruces, unconscious with critical injuries.
Espinoza was transported to MountainView Regional Medical Center, where he later died.
Traffic investigators determined that Espinoza was traveling north in a designated bicycle lane when he was struck from behind by a gray 2017 Chevrolet Equinox. The vehicle was driven by a 31-year-old man who remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Police said alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been factors in the crash. No charges have been filed at this time, but the investigation remains ongoing.
