LAS CRUCES - Borderless Brass Band will bring New Orleans-style jazz to the Mesilla Valley Jazz and Blues Society’s monthly gathering Sunday, July 19, in Las Cruces.

The event will be held at Alma d’Arte Charter High School, 402 W. Court Ave. A social begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by a short society update and music at 7 p.m.

Borderless Brass Band is a six-member ensemble led by Chris Oliver. The band has performed for Southwest audiences since 2017, drawing on New Orleans jazz traditions including swing, funk, funeral dirges and jazz marches.

“From traditional swing to funk bumps, funeral dirges and jazz marches, the BBB is sure to make you feel you’ve been transported to NOLA,” Oliver said.

Band members include Rosemary Oliver on clarinet, Nick Flood on saxophone and vocals, Chris Oliver on trumpet and vocals, John Scanlon on trombone and vocals, Tristan Bouilly on sousaphone and Sean Kilkenny on drums.

Tickets are $5 for Mesilla Valley Jazz and Blues Society members, $10 for nonmembers and $2 for students. Tickets may be purchased at the door or online at mvjazzblues.net/monthly-gatherings.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a dessert or appetizer to share.

Annual MVJBS memberships are $25 for individuals, $40 for families and $5 for students. Beginning July 1, annual memberships are half price. Membership information is available at mvjazzblues.net/membership.

Jazz and blues enthusiasts can also attend MVJBS’ monthly jazz jam every third Thursday at Boba Cafe and Cabaret on Espina Street. Musicians interested in joining the jam can email MVJBSjazzjam@gmail.com.
