Certified technicians will help families check installations and replace unsafe seats

Organ Mountain News report

LAS CRUCES - A free car seat fitting station will be open to the public Thursday, Dec. 4, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Sisbarro Buick-GMC at 425 W. Boutz Road in Las Cruces.

The event will give parents and caregivers hands-on help from nationally certified child passenger safety technicians. They will guide families on choosing the right seat, installing it correctly and understanding how to use car and booster seats safely.

Inspections will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointment is required.

Organizers encourage attendees to bring the car seat, the seat’s manual, the vehicle manual and, if possible, the child who uses the seat. A $35 fee may apply for replacements, and children must be present to qualify for a new seat.

Technicians will spend about 30 minutes per seat showing parents and caregivers how to properly install and use their equipment. Families can also ask questions and learn about common installation mistakes.

If a technician finds a seat is expired, recalled or unsafe, limited replacement seats will be available.

Fitting stations are funded by the NMDOT Traffic Safety Division and open to everyone.
