WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez honored fallen Doña Ana County Deputy Sheriff Antonio Aleman during a speech on the House floor Tuesday as part of National Police Week observances in Washington.

Vasquez recognized Aleman, who was killed in the line of duty in 2025 while serving with the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office.

“Deputy Sheriff Antonio Aleman … was with the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office since 2021, is remembered by his colleagues as a valued member of the department who will be deeply missed, and is survived by his wife and two children,” Vasquez said during the speech. “His service and sacrifice deserves to be honored by this body, along with the courage of all of those who wear the badge honorably.”

Vasquez said National Police Week should focus on honoring officers who have died in the line of duty, listening to law enforcement concerns and supporting efforts aimed at improving officer safety.

As part of National Police Week, the House passed a bipartisan resolution honoring officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. According to Vasquez’s office, Aleman was among the officers recognized in the resolution, which passed 418-2.

Vasquez was an original cosponsor of the resolution.

Vasquez also highlighted several pieces of legislation he has supported related to law enforcement safety, recruitment and retention.

His office said Vasquez led the Invest to Protect Act, a bipartisan proposal intended to improve officer safety and retention through funding for mental health support, de-escalation training and recruitment efforts at smaller departments.

The release also highlighted Vasquez’s support for legislation expanding funding for bulletproof vests, bringing retired officers back into support roles and providing additional training related to fentanyl exposure risks for first responders.

According to his office, Vasquez has also supported federal funding initiatives benefiting law enforcement agencies in New Mexico, including funding for Albuquerque’s Real Time Crime Center, technology upgrades at the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and infrastructure improvements at the Carlsbad Police Department.

The congressman’s office also noted Vasquez recently supported the Combating Organized Retail Crime Act, which passed the House this week. The bill would provide funding to state and local law enforcement agencies to combat organized retail theft and related criminal activity.
