Fire crews evacuate occupants, shift strategy after hydrant fails to support suppression efforts

Organ Mountain News report

LAS CRUCES - Firefighters responded early Friday morning to a house fire in the Las Alturas area.

Crews from Doña Ana Fire Rescue and Las Cruces Fire were dispatched just before 3:30 a.m. to the 4500 block of Mockingbird Street after receiving reports of a possible structure fire. Firefighters arrived within 10 minutes and found a single-story home on fire.

Firefighters evacuated all occupants from the home before beginning suppression efforts. Crews initially attacked the fire but shifted to a defensive strategy when a hydrant across the street could not provide enough water to support operations.

Firefighters spray water from a ladder truck onto a house fire at night, with flames and heavy smoke rising from the structure in the Las Alturas area.
