LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces police are warning residents to lock their vehicles and remove valuables after at least four auto burglaries were reported early Thursday in a neighborhood near Rinconada Boulevard.

Police said the incidents were reported about 2 a.m. Thursday, June 11. Investigators believe the perpetrators were roaming the residential neighborhood, checking for unlocked vehicle doors and stealing items from inside.

Police said the Thursday morning burglaries are not isolated and are not limited to that neighborhood. Similar reports have been taken throughout the city.

Residents are encouraged to roll up windows and lock vehicle doors when leaving vehicles unattended. Police also recommend keeping backpacks, luggage, packages, shopping bags, electronics, tools and other valuables out of sight.

Police said motorists should not leave firearms, ammunition, bank cards, cash, important documents, spare keys, garage door openers or key fobs inside unattended vehicles. Residents also are urged not to leave vehicles unlocked and unattended while running quick errands or pumping gas.

If possible, police recommend parking in well-lit areas or inside a garage, using a self-arming audible vehicle alarm system and considering a monitored home security system or motion-sensor alarm that overlooks the driveway.

Anyone with information about auto burglaries is asked to call police at 575-526-0795. Residents who see suspicious activity, including people or unknown vehicles roaming neighborhoods late at night or early in the morning, are asked to call police immediately.
