LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces City Council unanimously accepted a $1.43 million state grant Monday, June 1, for broadband infrastructure upgrades across city facilities.

The $1,427,361 grant from the New Mexico Office of Broadband Access and Expansion will fund the City of Las Cruces IT Infrastructure Upgrade project through the state’s Community Connect Program.

City Grant Manager Gabriela Prats told council the project will construct, expand or replace core high-speed broadband infrastructure used to provide services across city facilities.

“This is a great opportunity for us to upgrade, and IT will be upgrading pretty much all systems,” Prats said.

According to city documents, the grant will fund 85 additional access points at a cost of $108,597, as well as $595,677 for firewalls and other hardware, including local area networks and servers.

The project budget also includes $375,550 for engineering labor and configuration, $124,860 for contingency costs, $113,409 for reporting, $62,140 for temporary IT support, $33,530 for software licenses, $12,889 for cabling and connectors and $709 for mounting and enclosures.

The city is not required to provide a local match, according to the project budget.
