Las Cruces-shot film ‘Olmo’ opens in theaters nationwide

LAS CRUCES - “Olmo,” a coming-of-age film shot in and around Las Cruces, opened in theaters nationwide Friday, including at Allen Theatres in Las Cruces.
Directed by Fernando Eimbcke, the film follows 14-year-old Olmo and his family as they struggle to make ends meet in 1979 New Mexico.
Olmo shares responsibility for caring for his father, Nestor, whose illness keeps him confined to bed. But when Olmo’s neighbor Nina invites him to a party while he is alone with his father, he attempts to escape his caregiving duties and embarks on a night of mischief and chaos.
The film was shot in the Tortugas neighborhood, downtown Las Cruces and other locations around the city.
“‘Olmo’ tells a unique story about coming of age in a Latino household, and we are so honored they picked Las Cruces and some of our oldest neighborhoods to help bring the story to life,” Las Cruces Film Liaison Andrew Jara said.
The film stars Aivan Uttapa and Gustavo Sánchez Parra. Producers include Michael Franco, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Eréndira Núñez, according to the release.
The production team includes producers associated with “Minari” and “Moonlight.”
