Certified technicians will inspect child safety seats from 3 to 5 p.m. at Sisbarro Buick-GMC; replacement seats may be available for $35

LAS CRUCES - Parents and caregivers can get free help checking and installing child safety seats Thursday afternoon during a car seat fitting station in Las Cruces.

The event will run from 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 3 at Sisbarro Buick-GMC, 425 W. Boutz Road. Inspections are free, first-come, first-served and do not require an appointment.

Nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will inspect car seats and booster seats and provide hands-on help with proper selection, installation and use.

Organizers recommend participants bring the car seat, its manual, the vehicle owner’s manual and the child who uses the seat.

Technicians will spend about 30 minutes per seat and will check for proper fit and installation as well as expiration dates, recalls, damage and other potential safety concerns.

If a seat is found to be recalled, expired, damaged or otherwise unsafe, a replacement seat may be available for $35. Exact cash is required and no change will be available. The child must be present to qualify for a replacement seat.

The fitting station is funded by the New Mexico Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Division.
