LAS CRUCES - The chair of the Las Cruces Historic Preservation Committee has received a state award recognizing his work preserving and promoting New Mexico’s historic and cultural resources.

Dr. Jerry Wallace received the Heritage Preservation Individual Achievement Award from the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division, according to a city news release.

Wallace was honored May 29 during the 54th Annual Heritage Preservation Awards ceremony at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque. The awards are presented each year during Historic Preservation Month.

Doña Ana Community College nursing professor Andrea Cathey was recognized by High Desert Women’s Center for her volunteer work supporting mothers and families.

Wallace, a public historian at New Mexico State University, serves as chair of the city’s Historic Preservation Committee. The city said Wallace has been a strong advocate for preserving and promoting Las Cruces’ historic and cultural resources through his professional work, community engagement and leadership.

The New Mexico Historic Preservation Division’s Heritage Preservation Awards recognize individuals, organizations and projects that demonstrate excellence in preserving and promoting the state’s cultural and historic resources.

The Las Cruces Historic Preservation Committee advises the city on matters related to identifying, preserving and protecting historic properties and cultural resources.
