LCPD urges residents to track deliveries, secure drop-off spots and watch for suspicious activity as package thefts often rise in late November and December

LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces police are urging residents to take extra precautions to prevent package thefts as holiday deliveries increase and more parcels arrive after dark.

Police said porch piracy tends to rise in November and December when more packages are left unattended at front doors. Officers recommend several steps residents can take to reduce the chances of theft.

Track deliveries online and try to be home when packages are scheduled to arrive. Consider requiring a signature. When possible, add instructions for drivers on where to place items.

Residents can request electronic notifications when a package is delivered or ask a trusted neighbor to retrieve it. Police also suggest creating a concealed drop-off area using landscaping or planters to keep packages out of sight.

Lockboxes can secure deliveries until the homeowner returns. When feasible, have packages sent to a workplace, a local store or to a FedEx, UPS or post office location for pickup.

Police said motion-activated lights and home security cameras, such as video doorbells, can help deter thefts and alert residents to activity at their front door. Neighbors who notice suspicious behavior are encouraged to call police immediately.

Shoppers can also consider purchasing insurance for valuable items. While insurance does not stop theft, it can help make buyers whole if packages disappear.
