Organ Mountain News report

LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces Public Schools is seeking five new members for its Equity Council, including two parents and three community representatives, with applications due Sunday, Nov. 15.

The district announced the openings for the 2026-27 school year Wednesday, Oct. 28. The available positions include one parent of a current middle school student, one parent of a current high school student and three community members.

The Equity Council advises the LCPS superintendent on improving academic outcomes for all students, with particular attention to students with disabilities, Native American students, English learners and students from economically disadvantaged households.

Council members review district data with LCPS staff, hear directly from families and develop recommendations for the superintendent.

The council includes teachers, principals, parents, community members and school board representatives. Applicants are screened and voted on through a process overseen by the current council.

Members generally commit two to six hours per month, with occasional additional subcommittee work. Regular meetings are held on the last Wednesday of each month from 4:45 to 6 p.m.

LCPS also plans two informal community mixers — one conducted in English and the other in Spanish — where prospective applicants can meet current council members and ask questions before deciding whether to apply. Dates and locations have not yet been announced.

Interested parents and community members must complete the interest form by Sunday, Nov. 15, 2026.

Applications, council agendas and additional information are available on the LCPS Equity Council webpage.
