MESILLA - The Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery will highlight the work of two New Mexico artists in November: oil painter Linda Hagen and woodturner Richard Spellenberg.

Hagen moved to Las Cruces from Ohio in 2004 and quickly connected to New Mexico’s distinctive light and landscape. She paints both in her studio and en plein air — a French term for painting outdoors — often from the back of her 1994 pickup, “Bessie.” Her love of nature and animals, especially horses, runs through her work.

Spellenberg, a retired New Mexico State University biology professor, has lived in Las Cruces since 1968. Drawn to creating useful items that are also visually compelling, he developed a passion for woodturning that evolved from early experiments with ashtray holders into a full-time pursuit after retirement. His interest in the natural patterns of wood has deepened through years of study and practice.

The gallery will also host a birthday celebration honoring Georgia O’Keeffe on Nov. 15 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Members will display artwork inspired by O’Keeffe’s style, and refreshments will be provided.

In conjunction, the Fountain Theatre across the street will screen The Brightness of Light from Nov. 15–17, a film exploring O’Keeffe’s life and art.

The Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery represents 30 regional artists working across a variety of media, including oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, fused glass, wood, stained glass, ceramics, photography, fiber art and jewelry.

The gallery is located at 2470-A Calle de Guadalupe in Mesilla, across from the Fountain Theatre.
