SANTA FE - The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division announced in early December that residents can now add their state driver’s licenses and IDs to Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. The new feature allows users to securely present their identification on mobile devices for select purposes.

Mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs) can currently be used at participating TSA checkpoints nationwide, select businesses and venues, Apple Store locations across the U.S. and in supported mobile apps.

In New Mexico, TSA checkpoints at Albuquerque Sunport and Lea County Regional Airport near Hobbs will begin accepting mDLs in the coming weeks.

“This new capability adds convenience for residents who often have their mobile devices with them,” said Taxation and Revenue Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke.

New verification app

As part of the program, businesses and organizations that verify customer age can now accept mDLs through the NM Verifier app, available for iOS devices. The app, introduced by the MVD in partnership with the New Mexico Regulation & Licensing Department, enables secure verification of mobile IDs without additional hardware.

Physical licenses still required

Mobile driver’s licenses and IDs are optional and do not replace physical credentials. Residents must still carry their physical licenses while driving.

“We’re among the first states to offer mobile driver’s licenses, and this innovation provides added convenience and security for our residents,” said MVD Director Htet Gonzales.
