The free July 17 event includes a discussion tied to Jamie Eisenstein’s Cameo exhibition before the Russian-language film screening.

LAS CRUCES - The New Mexico State University Art Museum will host a free screening of the 1975 Soviet children’s musical The Adventures of Buratino on Friday, July 17.

The event is part of the museum’s Friday Night Film Seminar series and is tied to Jamie Eisenstein’s exhibition Cameo, which asks audiences to consider what is real and where life begins.

The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a discussion led by Dr. Megan Metcalf, an NMSU professor and co-curator of Cameo. The film will begin at 6 p.m.

The museum will screen the film in its original Russian language with English subtitles. Popcorn and refreshments will be provided, and attendees are welcome to bring a blanket and pillow.

The Adventures of Buratino is a two-part children’s musical directed by Leonid Nechayev. The film follows Buratino, a boy made of wood, who meets the actors of Karabas Barabas’ theater and sets out to free them.

The film is adapted from The Golden Key by Alexey Tolstoy, a story that began as a Soviet translation of Pinocchio before departing from the original story.

All University Art Museum exhibitions and programming are free.
