LAS CRUCES - Embark on a journey through the tales of the Brothers Grimm with New Mexico State University Theatre’s production of “Into the Woods.” The musical’s opening night is 7 p.m. Friday, April 24 at the NMSU Center for the Arts, followed by a reception.

“I am so thrilled at how this show is coming together,” said Lisa Hermanson, director of the production and musical theatre assistant professor. “‘Into The Woods’” was composed by the late Stephen Sondheim, a legendary composer whose works are intricately challenging and delightfully crafted. Doing a Sondheim musical presents many unique challenges and I’m so proud of how our students and everyone involved have risen to the occasion and grown so much through the process.”

“Into the Woods,” Sondheim’s musical based on the book by James Lapine, has been at the center of numerous awards, regional productions and a Disney film adaptation since it first appeared on Broadway in 1987. It weaves together several fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm, including Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Jack and the Beanstalk, into a single story that explores the costs of dreams coming true.

“All of our students are putting an incredible amount of work into this project, not just as actors, but also as crew, designers, helping to build the set, props, costumes, and so much more in order to get this huge show built and ready to go on time,” Hermanson said. “We have nearly 70 people involved every night making this production happen, and I’m so excited for audiences to come see and celebrate everyone’s hard work.”
