NMSU police said the suspect is connected to multiple fires reported in residence halls and other campus buildings over the past several months

LAS CRUCES - New Mexico State University Police arrested a suspect wanted in three arson incidents committed in the early hours of May 3 and May 4 on the NMSU campus.

Robin Appleton, 58, is charged with three counts of arson over $500 and one count of larceny in connection with the recent incidents. All charges are fourth-degree felonies.

NMSU Police investigated the incidents that occurred within a 24-hour period in which palm trees were set on fire near the Delta Zeta sorority residence, between Hardman and Jacobs Undergraduate Learning Center and Domenici Hall, and between Branson Library and Foster Hall.

While the investigation was ongoing, NMSU Police increased patrols to protect the safety of the campus community and called on the Las Cruces community to help identify the suspect.

“I appreciate the community’s due diligence,” NMSU Police Chief Justin Dunivan said. “We received numerous tips to help with our investigation, and I'm incredibly grateful for the hard work of everyone involved in solving this case.” 

NMSU first responders have developed the following list of safety suggestions regarding any suspicious activity: 

• Always be aware of your surroundings and of any strangers near you. If you are going to be involved in activities where you are unable to focus on your environment and what is going on around you (e.g., when playing games on a smartphone), do so with friends so you can help each other watch for dangerous situations.
• If someone is acting suspiciously near you, move away toward large groups and well-lit areas. If the person follows you and/or continues to act in a suspicious manner, consider challenging them or call 911 for assistance.
• Don’t leave valuables unattended in unlocked lockers, study areas or classrooms.
• If you observe possible safety issues at NMSU, notify the Police Department immediately. If someone could get seriously injured, please call 911. If it isn’t as serious but needs to be addressed, call 575-646-3311.
