LAS CRUCES - A new podcast and video series hosted by New Mexico state poet laureate Manuel González will hold a live recording Sunday at New Mexico State University, inviting the public to join a conversation about jobs and family economic security.

“Pass the Sopapillas,” presented by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, brings together parents, educators, community leaders and innovators to discuss ideas aimed at strengthening opportunities for New Mexico children and families.

The Las Cruces taping will take place Sunday, May 31, at KRWG Studios in NMSU’s Milton Hall. Doors open at 2 p.m., with the live recording scheduled from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. The event will also include music, community conversations and sopapillas.

“In New Mexico, passing sopapillas around the table is about togetherness, sharing and connection,” González said in a statement. “That is what this podcast is about — bringing people together to share ideas and imagine the future we want for our children and families. We may come from different cultures and communities, but we are all at the same table for the same reason: we love our kids and want to see them thrive.”

The series will release episodes every two weeks through August. Planned topics include land, culture and identity; education and literacy; universal free child care; jobs and economic security; youth voices; maternal and child health; and healing from the legacies of racism and colonialism.

The Kellogg Foundation named New Mexico a priority place for its investments in 2007 and maintains offices in the state.

“New Mexico has been on a hot streak, passing free in-state college tuition, free school meals and universal childcare,” Micah McCoy, a W.K. Kellogg Foundation communications officer based in Albuquerque, said in a statement. “New Mexicans have proven they can take on big challenges and make life better for children and families. So what else is possible? ‘Pass the Sopapillas’ is about inviting New Mexicans to keep asking that question — and to see themselves as part of the answer.”

Raul Pacheco of Ozomatli, who is from Albuquerque, composed original music for the series. “Pass the Sopapillas” will stream on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and iHeart Podcasts, with captioned video episodes available on YouTube.
