SUNLAND PARK - A man is accused of repeatedly strangling a woman, preventing her from calling 911 and assaulting two young children during a domestic violence incident in Sunland Park, according to court documents.

Brian Peña Trevino, 19, faces multiple felony charges, including four counts of aggravated battery against a household member resulting in great bodily harm, child abuse, false imprisonment and interference with communications, records show.

According to a criminal complaint and statement of probable cause, the incident occurred Saturday, April 18, at an apartment on Valle Vista Drive. The victim told officers the situation escalated from an argument into a physical assault.

Authorities allege Peña Trevino grabbed the victim by the neck multiple times, making it difficult for her to breathe and causing her to feel as though she might lose consciousness. The victim reported seeing stars and fearing she could die during the encounter.

The victim told officers Peña Trevino took her phone and broke it when she attempted to call 911, then prevented her from leaving the residence and chased her when she tried to escape, according to the report.

Two young children — ages 1 and 3 — were present during the incident. Court documents allege Peña Trevino grabbed one child by the legs, and a second child was thrown against a bed frame, striking the back of the neck.

Officers observed visible injuries to the victim, including bruising to her arm and injuries to her chest and throat. She was transported to a hospital for treatment and later released, according to the report.

Court records indicate there have been prior incidents between the two.

Peña Trevino remains in custody. A public safety assessment classified the case as involving a violent offense and recommended pretrial monitoring conditions.
