ALBUQUERQUE - Two Mescalero Apache men have been sentenced to federal prison in separate violent crime cases — one for a brutal baseball bat attack in 2022, the other for sexually abusing a child.

In one case, Spencer George Klinekole, 41, received a sentence of more than four years for a November 2022 assault that left a victim seriously injured. Prosecutors said Klinekole attacked an unidentified female victim with a baseball bat, causing significant injuries. He will be subject to three years of supervised release after serving his sentence.

In the other case, Carlos Caje, 37, was sentenced to three years in prison for sexually abusing a minor under the age of 12 in February 2022. Caje pleaded guilty to abusive sexual contact and, upon release, will be under supervision for 15 years and required to register as a sex offender.

Both men are enrolled members of the Mescalero Apache Tribe. The Las Cruces Resident Agency of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office investigated both cases with assistance from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

There is no parole in the federal system.
