LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces firefighters responded to a fire at an abandoned building Sunday afternoon on the 700 block of North Mesquite Street.

Crews were dispatched just after 4:30 p.m. April 26 and arrived within about four minutes to find heavy fire coming from the rear of the structure. High winds contributed to volatile conditions as the fire spread through the roof and attic.

Firefighters conducted a full search of the building before transitioning to defensive operations and exiting the structure.

Crews brought the fire under control within about 15 minutes of arrival.
