LAS CRUCES - La Llorona Park is closed because of rising water levels in the Rio Grande, the City of Las Cruces announced Wednesday.

The Parks and Recreation Department and city park rangers closed the park immediately after recent rain and runoff caused water levels to rise.

City officials said the conditions could be dangerous and potentially life-threatening in and around the park.

Residents are being urged to stay out of La Llorona Park until further notice and not to enter or cross areas affected by rising or floodwater.

The park is expected to remain closed through Wednesday, Sept. 30, and will be assessed for safety before reopening.

Officials are also urging residents to avoid flooded areas and not attempt to drive or walk through rising water.
