LAS CRUCES - Two East Mesa roadways have been identified as among the city’s worst for speeding, and police plan to ramp up enforcement there in the coming weeks.

Metrics reviewed by the Las Cruces Police Department’s Traffic Section show a stretch of Highway 70 between Roadrunner Parkway and Rinconada Boulevard, and a section of Red Hawk Golf Road between Central Avenue and Arroyo Road, as top spots for speed violations.

On Highway 70, where the limit is 55 mph, data indicate 85 percent of drivers travel at least 71 mph — 16 miles over the limit. On Red Hawk Golf Road, posted at 30 mph, 85 percent of drivers average about 45 mph.

Traffic engineers typically use the 85th percentile to determine speed limits. Police said drivers should expect stepped-up enforcement on both roads soon.
