District recognized as only school system in New Mexico to receive both honors

LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces Public Schools has earned national recognition for its budgeting and procurement practices, receiving two awards for financial operations.

The district’s finance division received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association, marking the second time LCPS has earned the honor.

LCPS was the only school district in New Mexico to receive the award this year.

The district’s purchasing department also received the Award of Excellence in Procurement from the National Procurement Institute for fiscal year 2025, the third time LCPS has earned that distinction. LCPS was also the only district in the state to receive that award.

The Las Cruces Public Schools Board voted unanimously to remove César Chávez’s name from an elementary school, with the renaming process beginning immediately.

Superintendent Ignacio Ruiz said the recognitions reflect the district’s commitment to accountability and responsible management of public funds.

“Our finance and purchasing teams work diligently to ensure transparency and accountability in every dollar we manage," Ruiz stated. “Their efforts directly support our mission to be the district where all learners thrive.”

The awards recognize organizations for transparency, financial planning and procurement practices.
