DEMING - The New Mexico Department of Transportation is preparing for hazardous road conditions as a winter storm advisory is in effect for Jan. 6, 2025, according to the National Weather Service.

NMDOT crews will monitor roads alongside law enforcement and emergency responders, coordinating efforts to address traffic disruptions caused by snow and ice. Real-time traffic updates will be available at NMroads.com or by calling 511 within New Mexico or 1-800-432-4269.

Winter driving tips

Drivers are urged to follow these safety guidelines:

  • Reduce speed: The best way to prevent accidents on snow and ice is to slow down and leave plenty of distance between vehicles.
  • Winter driving techniques: Keep your gas tank full, use headlights and ensure windshield washer fluid contains antifreeze. Carry chains, a winter survival kit (flashlight, hand warmers, first aid supplies, snacks, bottled water and medications) and familiarize yourself with your vehicle's features, such as ABS or four-wheel drive, by consulting the owner’s manual.
  • Avoid snow clouds: Semi-trucks and snowplows can create dense clouds of blowing snow. Maintain distance to avoid reduced visibility.
  • Plan ahead: Allow extra time for travel and be patient with delays.
  • Check before passing: Confirm the location of snowplows and their blades before attempting to pass, especially on multi-lane highways where visibility may be obstructed.
  • Monitor weather forecasts: Winter storms can develop rapidly. Stay informed of conditions before traveling.
  • Turn off cruise control: Cruise control should not be used on slippery roads, as it reduces your ability to control the vehicle in case of a skid.
  • Check road conditions: Visit NMroads.com or dial 511 for up-to-date road advisories.
  • Wear seatbelts: Ensure all passengers are buckled up.

NMDOT advises all motorists to remain cautious and prepared during winter storms to ensure safety for themselves and others on the road. For more information, visit NMroads.com.
