Maxwell, the first NCAA basketball player to reach 2,500 points, 1,000 rebounds and 300 steals, will be inducted June 27 in Albuquerque.

ALBUQUERQUE - New Mexico State University basketball legend Anita Maxwell will be inducted into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame as part of its 2025 class.

Maxwell was a trailblazing player for NMSU women’s basketball and became the first NCAA basketball player — male or female — to record 2,500 points, 1,000 rebounds and 300 steals in a career, according to the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame.

An All-American, Maxwell also became the first player in NMSU history to have her number retired.

She is one of five members of the Hall of Fame’s 2025 induction class, which also includes Olympic medalist Courtney Frerichs, longtime high school football coach Miles Watters, golf coach John Fields and former Artesia and Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones.

The public is invited to the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 27, at The Clyde Hotel in Albuquerque.
