Organ Mountain News report

LAS CRUCES - The City of Las Cruces is teaming up with New Mexico State University and state Rep. Angelica Rubio for Ruedas Unidas/Wheels United, an open streets event aimed at getting residents moving, playing and imagining streets designed for more than cars.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, Solano Drive will be closed from Wofford Drive to University Avenue, and University Avenue will be closed from Solano Drive to Espina Street.

Space to play

The closure will give residents room to bike, skate, walk, run, dance, exercise or simply cheer from the sidelines. All ages and abilities are welcome — whether on bikes, skates, wheelchairs or on foot.

Participants can join a bike parade, test their skills in a bike safety course or take part in other activities hosted by city departments and local nonprofits. Food vendors will be on site.

Mayor Eric Enriquez will also host the annual Mayor’s Bike Ride that day. The route has not yet been announced, but will conclude at the Ruedas Unidas event at University Avenue and Solano Drive.

Organizers describe the event as more than a day of fun — it’s a way to reimagine what Las Cruces streets could look like if designed to prioritize pedestrians and bicyclists.
