LAS CRUCES - U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez released a report Thursday examining rising energy costs in New Mexico and across the country, pointing to increases in gas and utility prices over the past year.

The report outlines changes in energy prices since early 2025, including higher residential natural gas and electricity costs. It also notes increases in gasoline prices, which Vasquez attributes to federal policy decisions.

β€œThis sharp rise in gas and utility prices was preventable and is unacceptable,” Vasquez said in a statement. He pointed to his proposed Energy Bills Relief Act as one approach to lowering costs, including expanding access to low-income energy assistance programs, supporting energy projects and modernizing the energy grid.

The report also highlights impacts in New Mexico, including increases in average annual energy costs for households and rising gasoline prices statewide.

Vasquez outlined additional legislative efforts related to energy costs, including measures aimed at reducing regulatory barriers, improving energy efficiency and supporting federal assistance programs.

The report is available online.
