Free event will feature weaving demonstrations, rug talks and hundreds of handcrafted pieces from Hubbell Trading Post

ALAMOGORDO - White Sands National Park will host a Navajo rug show April 25-26 at the park’s visitor center courtyard, featuring demonstrations, talks and hundreds of handcrafted rugs.

The event, held in partnership with the Western National Parks Association, will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day and is free and open to all ages.

Organizers said the show will include rugs from Hubbell Trading Post, the oldest continuously operating trading post in the American Southwest.

Diné trader Wallace James Jr. will present Navajo rug talks at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. both days, discussing weaving techniques, history, symbolism and how to select and care for rugs.

Weaving demonstrations by Diné weaver Tonita Yazzie will take place throughout each day.
